Cursor alternatives: compare editor, terminal, and open-source agents
Cursor is an AI-native editor, so the right alternative depends on whether you want to keep your editor, move agent work to a terminal, change the model provider, or avoid a bundled usage pool.
What actually matters
- Name the thing you want to replace: the editor switch, inline completion, multi-file agent loops, provider lock-in, or the pricing model.
- GitHub Copilot keeps the existing editor and now includes IDE and cloud-agent surfaces, but Neovim remains an official completions-only path.
- Cline and Kilo add open-source agent loops inside editor ecosystems, while Claude Code, OpenCode, and Aider keep terminal work beside the editor.
- Continue can still be useful for local or BYOK assistance, but its frozen roadmap makes it an archive or migration choice rather than a new team default.
- Compare seat allowances, pooled credits, API spend, retries, and review time together; a lower sticker price is not automatically a lower task cost.
The shortlist
- GitHub Copilot when editor coverage and GitHub identity matter more than changing surfaces.
- Cline or Kilo when you want an open-source agent in a VS Code or JetBrains workflow with provider choice.
- Claude Code when terminal-native delegation and large repository changes are the main job.
- OpenCode or Aider when you want an open-source terminal client and explicit control over the model endpoint.
A sensible test workflow
- 01Write down the current Cursor workflow, including editor, model routing, agent limits, and approval points.
- 02Run one representative issue through two alternatives on a disposable branch and record review effort, retries, and total spend.
- 03Keep the alternative only if it improves the constraint that caused the search; otherwise the migration cost is the product decision.
Common mistakes
- Treating every Cursor alternative as an equivalent AI editor when some are terminal agents or assistive plugins.
- Comparing a bundled seat with a BYOK client without adding model usage and operator time.
- Assuming an open-source client means the connected hosted model is private or open-weight.
