Apple silicon
Compare MacBook Neo, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Mac mini, and Mac Studio by form factor, unified memory, ports, and the workloads you run every day — with optional local-model capacity notes below.
The Mac decision
Form factor and memory first — chip generation second.
Unified memory and storage are fixed at purchase. Size for the heaviest workload you will keep open, not the lightest demo. Search links target Amazon UK product families — verify the exact chip, memory, and storage on the listing.

Form factor
Start with where the Mac will live and what you run every week. Chip generation matters after that.
| Chassis | Best for | RAM guidance | Storage guidance | Trade-offs | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
![]() | Entry macOS on a tight budget — writing, study, browsing, and light everyday tasks | Ships with 8GB — treat that as a hard floor to be wary of, not a multi-year recommendation; step up to Air 16GB if you keep many apps and tabs open | Apple UK from £699 (8GB/256GB) to £799 (512GB); John Lewis/Argos sometimes undercut on street — confirm before ordering | Cheapest new Mac path (A18 Pro), but 8GB unified memory is the practical ceiling for longevity — fine for light use, painful once you multitask hard | Search Amazon UK(paid link) (opens in new tab) |
![]() | Portable everyday work — writing, study, calls, browsing, and light creative tasks | 16GB is the practical floor in 2026; 24GB if you keep many apps and browser tabs open | Apple UK from £1,299 (13″) / £1,499 (15″) after the June 2026 hike; Amazon UK often £120–150 off base configs when in stock. Prefer 512GB+ for multi-year use | Fanless and light, but no sustained-load headroom and fewer ports. M5 Air drives up to two external displays with the lid open (two 6K/60Hz or 4K/144Hz, or one 8K/60Hz). As of early Aug 2026 Apple faces a major Air shortage (memory crunch) — US online waits often 2–6 weeks and higher-RAM configs slip later; check Apple delivery ETA and third-party stock before promising 'this week', and consider base MacBook Pro if Air is weeks out | Search Amazon UK(paid link) (opens in new tab) |
![]() | Developers and creatives who need sustained performance in a bag-friendly size | 24GB for most pro work; 36–48GB when timelines, containers, or large projects are routine | 1TB is the comfortable default; creative libraries fill 512GB quickly | More heat and weight than Air, but better thermals, brighter screen, more ports, and multi-display support. During the Aug 2026 Air shortage Apple has been steering some buyers toward base 14″ Pro when Air ETA slips — a rational “need it this week” path, not an upsell myth | Search Amazon UK(paid link) (opens in new tab) |
![]() | On-the-go workstations — long compiles, video timelines, and large unified-memory workloads | 36GB minimum for heavy creative work; 48–128GB when memory is the constraint, not CPU | 1TB floor; 2TB+ when project archives cannot live on external drives alone | Largest portable Mac — premium price and weight, but the screen and battery suit all-day desk-on-lap work | Search Amazon UK(paid link) (opens in new tab) |
![]() | Quiet desk productivity, development, and macOS-first home or office setups | 16GB for light desk work; 24GB for development; 32GB+ when VMs or heavy multitasking are daily | 512GB with external NVMe is common; configure internal storage if Thunderbolt clutter matters | Excellent value per pound for desk use, but no display, keyboard, or battery — and fixed memory at purchase | Search Amazon UK(paid link) (opens in new tab) |
![]() | Fixed desks that need maximum memory bandwidth and I/O without a Mac Pro tower | 64GB for serious creative pipelines; 96–128GB when the workload already outgrows a 128GB M5 Max MacBook Pro | 1TB internal minimum; plan fast external arrays for large media libraries | Highest throughput in a small box — M4 Max from £2,499 covers most Studio buyers; M3 Ultra from £5,299 is the memory/bandwidth step up. No portability either way | Search Amazon UK(paid link) (opens in new tab) |
Memory & storage
Both are fixed at purchase. The table below is workload-based — not a chip badge chase.
| Workload | RAM target | Storage target | Watch out |
|---|---|---|---|
| Everyday — browser, docs, video calls | 16GB unified memory | 512GB SSD | MacBook Neo ships at 8GB — avoid that floor if you plan to keep the machine for years; clearance 8GB Airs are the same trap |
| Development — IDEs, Docker, local databases | 24–32GB unified memory | 1TB SSD | Containers and simulators consume memory quietly; buy headroom once |
| Creative — photo, video, music production | 32–48GB unified memory | 1–2TB SSD plus fast external storage | Scratch disks and render caches punish undersized internal storage |
| Heavy workstation — large timelines, many VMs, big projects | 64GB+ unified memory | 2TB+ SSD or Studio-class internal options | Memory cannot be upgraded later — the ceiling you buy is the ceiling you keep |
Choose MacBook Neo when the budget is the constraint and the work is light: writing, study, browsing, and video calls. Apple UK lists £699 for 8GB/256GB (A18 Pro) and £799 for 512GB — John Lewis/Argos may still show lower street prices — but treat 8GB as a warning, not a long-term floor. Move to MacBook Air (16GB+) when tabs, creative apps, or multi-year ownership matter more than the sticker.
Choose MacBook Air when portability, silence, and battery matter more than sustained exports or multi-display desk setups — and only when Apple or a reseller can deliver on your timeline. As of early August 2026, Air is in a major shortage (especially higher-RAM configs); do not auto-recommend Air for “buy this week” if delivery ETA is weeks out. Move to MacBook Pro when compile times, render queues, or routine external-monitor work are part of every week — and treat base 14″ Pro as the practical in-stock alternative while Air is constrained.
Mac mini covers most home and office desks at the best value. Mac Studio starts with M4 Max from £2,499 for buyers who need more I/O and memory bandwidth than a mini; M3 Ultra from £5,299 is the step for workloads that already outgrow Max-class memory. Neither is a portable machine.
As of August 2026, shipping Macs are: MacBook Neo on A18 Pro; MacBook Air and MacBook Pro on M5-generation silicon; Mac mini on M4; Mac Studio on M4 Max / M3 Ultra. Park OLED/touch MacBook Pro, entry M6 MacBook Pro, and Neo A19 refresh talk under rumor/watch only — none of those are confirmed shipping products for UK buyers today. Match the chassis you can buy now to your routine before chasing the newest badge.
Optional planning
Unified memory doubles as model capacity. Use this table only when local inference is part of the purchase — otherwise use the chassis matrix above or the laptop finder.
| Chassis | Chip | Generation | Unified memory | Usable approx. | Bandwidth | Comfortable to | Reality check | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| MacBook Air | M5 | Current portable (M5, 2026) | 16GB | 12GB | Not verified | 16B | About 12GB usable after unified-memory headroom. Comfortable for models up to roughly 14B at Q4; larger models need more memory than this chassis offers. | Search Amazon UK(paid link) (opens in new tab) |
| MacBook Air | M5 | Current portable (M5, 2026) | 24GB | 18GB | Not verified | 24B | About 18GB usable after unified-memory headroom. Comfortable for models up to roughly 24B at Q4; a 70B model needs about 42GB and does not fit. | Search Amazon UK(paid link) (opens in new tab) |
| MacBook Pro 14″ | M5 Pro | Current portable (M5, 2026) | 24GB | 18GB | Not verified | 24B | About 18GB usable — same memory ceiling as Air 24GB, with more sustained bandwidth for the workloads that justify Pro. | Search Amazon UK(paid link) (opens in new tab) |
| MacBook Pro 16″ | M5 Max | Current portable (M5, 2026) | 48GB | 36GB | Not verified | 48B | About 36GB usable after unified-memory headroom. Comfortable for models up to roughly 48B at Q4; a 70B model needs about 42GB at Q4 and does not fit. | Search Amazon UK(paid link) (opens in new tab) |
| MacBook Pro 16″ | M5 Max | Current portable (M5, 2026) | 128GB | 96GB | Not verified | 128B | About 96GB usable after unified-memory headroom. Current MacBook Pro memory ceiling — Studio is no longer the only 96GB+ Apple Silicon path. Memory bandwidth is not inventoried here without a current Apple spec receipt. | Search Amazon UK(paid link) (opens in new tab) |
| Mac mini | M4 | Current desk (M4, late 2024) | 24GB | 18GB | 120 GB/s | 24B | About 18GB usable after unified-memory headroom. Comfortable for models up to roughly 24B at Q4; a 70B model needs about 42GB and does not fit. | Search Amazon UK(paid link) (opens in new tab) |
| Mac mini | M4 Pro | Current desk (M4, late 2024) | 24GB | 18GB | 273 GB/s | 24B | More bandwidth than the base M4, but the same ~18GB usable ceiling — comfortable to roughly 24B at Q4; 70B does not fit. | Search Amazon UK(paid link) (opens in new tab) |
| MacBook Pro 16″ | M4 Max | Prior portable (M4 Max, still sold) | 48GB | 36GB | 546 GB/s | 48B | About 36GB usable after unified-memory headroom. Comfortable for models up to roughly 48B at Q4; a 70B model needs about 42GB at Q4 and does not fit. | Search Amazon UK(paid link) (opens in new tab) |
| MacBook Pro 16″ | M4 Max | Prior portable (M4 Max, still sold) | 64GB | 48GB | 546 GB/s | 64B | About 48GB usable. A 70B model needs about 42GB at Q4, so it may load — but it is a tight fit once context and applications are included. | Search Amazon UK(paid link) (opens in new tab) |
| MacBook Pro 16″ | M4 Max | Prior portable (M4 Max, still sold) | 128GB | 96GB | 546 GB/s | 128B | About 96GB usable. Comfortable for models up to roughly 128B at Q4 under the same headroom rule, subject to runtime and context requirements. Current M5 Max MacBook Pro also reaches 128GB — Studio is no longer the only 96GB+ Apple Silicon path. | Search Amazon UK(paid link) (opens in new tab) |
| Mac Studio | M3 Ultra | Current Studio Ultra (M3 Ultra; Max tier also sold from £2,499) | 96GB | 72GB | 819 GB/s | 96B | About 72GB usable. Comfortable for models up to roughly 96B at Q4 under the same headroom rule, before leaving room for long context. Studio also sells M4 Max from £2,499 for buyers who do not need Ultra memory. | Search Amazon UK(paid link) (opens in new tab) |
Quiet capacity vs gaming throughput.
A high-memory Mac can be simpler and quieter for large memory workloads. A discrete GPU desktop usually wins on games and interactive throughput once the model or scene fits.
Choose the Mac form factor when that is the product you want on the desk or in the bag. Choose a PC build when gaming frames or CUDA software paths are the real constraint.
Memory cannot be upgraded after purchase.
Leave room for the operating system, browser tabs, creative apps, and any local runtimes you keep open. A configuration that only fits the peak workload on paper is not comfortable day to day.
Verify ports, display count, and whether you need Thunderbolt docks. Spec sheets sell chips; desks and bags decide the machine.
