Every spec site ranks chips by benchmark scores. These pages do something more durable: they reason from the specifications themselves — what each chip is built for, and what each socket means for your next upgrade.

specs are manufacturer figures; positioning, not benchmarks
Every number on this page is a published specification — cores, threads, boost clock, cache, power, socket. You will find no frame rates or benchmark scores here, because we have not measured any. What specifications do support is positioning: stacked cache exists to feed game engines, high thread counts exist for parallel work, and the socket decides whether your next CPU is a drop-in upgrade or a new motherboard.
Fit for use
Derived from cache, clocks and thread count — the reasoning is underneath the table, and the thresholds are crude on purpose.

How this is derived. Gaming fit reads L3 cache and boost clock — 96MB or more of L3 means stacked 3D V-Cache, which exists precisely for games. Streaming, compile and local-AI fit read thread count, because parallel work is what threads are for.
“Stretched” does not mean unusable — it marks where a chip’s spec sheet runs out of headroom first. No frame rates are claimed anywhere here, because none were measured.

AMD publishes TDP; Intel publishes Processor Base Power. They are related but not the same unit, which is why no row here is declared more efficient than another. Launch MSRPs are the manufacturers' own US figures — street prices move, older chips routinely sell below MSRP, and the GBP figure is an indicative conversion at a static rate, not a live price. The two specifications that actually organise this market.
AMD’s X3D chips stack extra L3 cache onto the die, and game engines are what that cache feeds — which is why an 8-core X3D part is the gaming pick over higher-clocked chips with more cores. For everything parallel — streaming while you play, builds, renders, a local model in the background — thread count is the specification that answers.
Then buy the socket, not just the chip. AM5 carries two Ryzen generations already and AMD has committed to it through 2029; LGA1700 ends with 14th gen; LGA1851 is brand new. The cheapest upgrade is the one that reuses the motherboard.
