Portable gaming

Handhelds for the games you actually play

The right handheld is a trade between library access, screen, battery, ergonomics and how much Windows friction you will tolerate.

The buying rule

Pick the game library and portability pattern before comparing raw teraflops.

Handheld performance varies with power mode, game patch and operating system. Treat every retailer listing as configuration-specific.

  1. 01Valve

    Steam Deck OLED

A console-like Linux handheld with a large PC game library and simple suspend/resume. Steam UK: OLED 512GB ~£649, 1TB ~£779 (post–May 2026 hike). LCD model availability (new, remaining or refurbished) is region-dependent — confirm on store.steampowered.com rather than treating new LCD as a current buy.

    Best for
Steam-first players who value a coherent handheld experience
    Watch out
Not every PC game or anti-cheat system behaves well on SteamOS.
  2. 02ASUS

    ROG Xbox Ally

Windows handheld value story — UK RRP ~£499.99 (Z2 A, 16GB/512GB), undercutting Steam Deck OLED 512GB (£649). Retailer promos come and go; the Xbox Ally X is the battery/performance step up.

    Best for
Players who want Windows launchers without Ally X pricing
    Watch out
Windows updates, launchers and a desktop interface add handheld friction.
  3. 03ASUS

    ROG Xbox Ally X

The current flagship Xbox-branded Windows handheld: Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, 24GB, 1TB and a larger battery than the base Ally, $999.99 estimated retail. Not the 2024 non-Xbox ROG Ally X — check the listing name. The X20 (7.4″ OLED) follows on 15 October 2026 at $1,299.99 / £1,299.

    Best for
Players who need Windows launchers and higher performance modes
    Watch out
Windows updates, launchers and a desktop interface add handheld friction.
  4. 04Lenovo

    Legion Go 2

Large-screen Windows handheld refresh (not the original Legion Go). Lenovo raised Legion Go 2 prices sharply in April 2026 (US Z2 16GB $1,099.99 → $1,499.99; 2TB Z2 Extreme ~$2,849.99), so older UK price bands are stale — verify the exact APU/RAM and live price before comparing to Ally/Deck.

    Best for
Desk-and-sofa play where screen size matters
    Watch out
The larger body is less pocketable and high-power modes reduce battery life.
  5. 05Nintendo

    Nintendo Switch 2

    First-party hybrid console. UK RRP £419.99 since 1 September 2026 (was £395.99); US $499.99, EU €499.99. Still just under Xbox Series S 512GB (£429.99).

    Best for
Nintendo games, local multiplayer and low-maintenance play
    Watch out
It is not a substitute for a PC handheld when the target is a PC library.
